ABOUT US
Wondercabinets was born in 2015 out of an interest in historic Cabinets of Curiosities and the pleasure of arranging items in boxes, letter trays, drawers and groupings on shelves. A fascination for 17th and 18th century trompe l’oeil paintings of Cabinets of Curiosities, and a desire to possess such a cabinet, led to the development of the service.
The creative drive of Wondercabinets is rooted in the art and heritage background of Wilma Bouwmeester, who loves developing new ideas inspired by great historic works of art and craft.
Our vision is to create engaging ways to bring together memories of people, places, experiences and achievements through the display of cherished possessions in beautiful cabinets and other keepsake products, enabling their stories to be captured for future generations.

WILMA BOUWMEESTER

A desire to draw and make things at a young age led to my creative development in art and music. It resulted in learning to play the accordion, and acquiring a diploma in Graphic Art & Textiles. During my teenage years, the accordion made way for a silver flute, and I embarked on a course in Textile Conservation including a temporary move to Scotland for an internship. Temporary became permanent, a degree in sustainable heritage followed. The Scottish folk scene became a great excuse for a new accordion and joining a ceilidh band gave a focus for my creativity. Life was happy-go-lucky, I found love, and bought a house nestled in the rolling Border hills where creativity blossomed, inside and out.
Inevitably, some of life’s changes were challenging and created emotional turmoil, and at times I turned to professional support to help me adapt to these changes and discover new paths for growth. A desire to help others in turn led to a certificate in Counselling Skills and becoming an active listener.
I sew, draw, knit, paint, and play music. I have a deep affinity with collecting and displaying memorabilia, treasured possessions and chance finds. The house is full of letter trays, drawers, shelves, and corners where items - alone or grouped into small collections - tell stories and recall cherished memories.
Heritage, creativity, and well-being come together in the initiative behind Wondercabinets.
When not creating a cabinet or rearranging a letter tray, I can be found among the vegetables in my garden, painting at my easel, or playing a waltz on the accordion.
